Defining your Wedding Look: Create a Look That is a True Reflection of You

Creating a cohesive style for your wedding day is a unique science of its own. It all comes down to the details, like finding accessories that will flow smoothly with your wedding aesthetic, finding ways to match with your significant other, your personal style, and more importantly, on finding the wedding dress that’s most fitting for you.

The hardest part of this endeavor is always getting started. The best way to get started is to get your creative juices flowing, so read on to find out how you can plan a wedding look that is a true reflection of you!

Visualize your Aesthetic

A great place to start is by visualizing your wedding day. What kinds of themes or aesthetics thrill you the most? Casual or Formal, unique or traditional? Do you lean more towards a fun and whimsical wedding, or want the classic white wedding experience? Is there a custom that you want to follow? Perhaps you have something much more specific in mind, like a costume-themed wedding with references to your favorite films or common interests as a couple?

How do you want your look to fit into the atmosphere your ideal wedding aesthetic? For example, if your wedding will be disney themed, maybe you want to wear Minnie Ears with your veil or go full-out princess with the gown. We’ve seen it done!

Are there any sentimental items (jewelry/shoes) that you want to integrate?

Define your Style

To be clear, just because you are normally casual, it doesn’t mean that you won’t feel like yourself in a formal wedding day getup (and vice a versa). Knowing where you stand in terms of your personal style, and how much of it you want to include in your wedding look, is just a great place to start.

Do you dress up before going out to the store, or does casual better define your everyday style? Now is the time to ask yourself questions like, What kind of clothes do I wear and why?, Is there a specific image that I like to portray? What colors do I like to wear? and How would my friends describe me?.

And more importantly, How do you see your personal style play into your dream wedding look?

Look at What’s Trendy

Think of the places you shop, and where you usually turn for fashion ideas. Read bridal magazines, see what bridal salons are carrying this season, and draw inspiration from what is currently trendy in the world of wedding dresses and accessories.

Keep your eyes open for trendy styles that you like, and see which of these are the best fit during your first fitting appointments.

How does your style fit with your Significant Other’s

The entire day is a celebration of your love, so both of your looks should definitely fit together nicely. Though your styles may differ, think of ways that your style can fit with that of your significant other’s. We’re not calling all couples to wear matching outfits (that’s not usually a good idea…), but your general aesthetic (formal, modern, or whimsical) should be similar.

Maybe this happy medium between your two styles might mean finding a way to integrate a shade of the color you’re wearing into his tie, or having the same floral theme in your bouquet and his boutonniere.

Don’t Sweat It!

The process of putting together the ideal wedding look is easier for some than for others. It’s okay to ask for help in this process - your dress consultant is definitely the best and most experienced person you could possibly ask for advice on integrating your personal style and vision into your wedding look. Be sure to keep perspective of the situation; more likely than not, you and your significant other would be ready to get married in jeans and t-shirts anyway!

Most of all, remember to take a breath and keep in mind that there’s a unique and personalized look out there for everyone on their wedding day. Hopefully these starting questions have inspired you and kicked off your brainstorming!
